Game Influences: Hamlet…. Yes. Hamlet.

Ok. I won’t lie. With all of the influences that games are affected by, it’s not surprising that themes and tropes from even Shakespearean plays have made their way into the gaming world. And a prime example… would be Hamlet. The Game. Yes, One of Shakespeare’s most famous plays has somehow made it as a game. It’s a cartoony point and click adventure game, where you travel through the plot of Hamlet. And I will admit, it looks hilarious.

Yup. That’s Polonius in the weird hazmat suit looking thing, with Ophelia in a cage locked away from Hamlet. The tiny kid in the corner. Fine, Not as appealing as it would seem to be, but it does follow the plot of Hamlet. Albeit loosely. I don’t remember Hamlet having to save Ophelia like a damsel in distress at all, nor do I remember Polonius ever having to wear a hazmat suit. But this game is focused more around puzzles for kids, and even then, it’s definitely kid friendly, because you kill Claudius by drowning him. Yes. Drowning him.

How the game ever managed to get past beta i will never know. But reading Hamlet definitely gave me insight into some game themes. One of which is having to plot an intricate vendetta against one person, only to have it end in your death as well as multiple others. I won’t lie. This was the most ridiculous game I’ve seen in quite a while, and I almost died laughing at it’s content.

Here’s a prime example.

Glaring problems aside, It is and was definitely entertaining to see such a formal work of art influence such a ridiculous game. Just goes to show that there’s always a good influence out there somewhere.

Gotta have some idea on where to look for a GAL

There’s an idea out there that’ll help you find your GAL but the question has to be asked. Where in the world am I going to get these ideas? For me, it’s all about getting to the heart of gaming, where I can find a game that helps influence my art, and helps change my life. For me, and millions like me, it’s all about League of Legends.

Wait. Wait. Wait. Before you start booing and jeering, or cheering and screaming, just hear me out. I’d rather my opinion be heard before it gets shredded by the public.

My best example here would be with a fellow graphic artist. He’s played League enough to love the game. He’s also played enough to really like a certain Champion (character you can play as, if you just don’t happen to know). My example here is his Wallpaper he did for a champion by the name of Draven.

I’ve stumbled across tons of gaming art: on Reddit, DeviantArt, and even company concept art for their assorted games. It all inspires me to do something just as great, and just as good. It’s something that I’ve been using recently to rekindle the fire that I’ve had towards game art and design for quite a while…

THere’s other ideas out there. And I’ll always bring some back to you guys, to give other people inspiration like they all did for me.

Plans never survive first contact with reality.

Never really thought that the class I’m in now would really open my eyes to how easily plans are shut down. After being a crop for crows to pick at, criticize, and question how my plan was going to go down, I decided that I would go with my backup plan : a graphic novel. Ok so I know it’s not exactly the best plan and I’ve been ridiculed for it, but if I didn’t do anything that people talked trash on of mine, I wouldn’t have any of my own art. This class kinda reinforced the idea that ideas need to be fluid. And that’ll help with my novel, considering that the medium has to flow with what peoples interests these days… And to go along with this theme of flowing plans: here’s one of my favorite quotes.

Life is all about innovation.

There’s nothing better when a new piece of art has been created. There’s just as much joy when a new game is created, and just as much when something new and technological has been created. Innovation is the key to life. Life never stands still, and so innovation helps push it along. And thus, my steps to innovation.

1. Acquire idea

2. Acquire materials.

3. Start working on it.

4. Fail utterly and miserably. (Or not, if you’re just that cool.)

5. Get more materials, get help from friends.

6. Fail again, if you didn’t learn enough from your first mistake.

7. GAIN MOAR MATERIALS… and more friends if you can or if your other friends gave up.

8. SUCCEED, as your project/innovation/idea comes to life and now exists.

9. ????

10. Profit. TIs the way of life.

I’m an artist at heart, who happens to be a gamer. So at the end of the day, I’ve always had scraps of art laying around. It got put down before it became too hectic and out of hand to draw. But when I do go through with it… You get stuff like this…

What having a GAL is like…

Yeah, I know. You ladies men out there have all the girls and all other guys are still trying to find a girlfriend, or the lucky ones haven’t ever fallen in love… with anyone real, at least. But in this case, it’s not about the girl. Not necessarily at least. It’s about finding a game. Yes, that’s right, a lot of people are in search of a Game. A Game that affects your Art, which then in turn affects your Life. So….. You have a GAL yet?
